Pont Croesor Extension

Pen-Y-Mount Station



The end of Pen-Y-Mount Station in August 2000, this has been the end of the Welsh Highland since the new line opened in 1980.

Looking back at P-Y-M Station, much of the undergrowth has been cleared between the crossing and the station building.

This area will eventually be the start of the 'Harbour Branch', linking the Welsh Highland to the Ffestiniog.

With Access to the extension restricted during the Foot and Mouth crisis, the area has been cleared for footpath demarcation.

The Knotweed area.

This area has been cleared of rail, and overgrowth, to provide an area to dump Japanese Knotweed infected topsoil.

The Topsoil will remain here until all the Knotweed has been removed.

2 Panels of the 'RED' siding have been removed to give access to the area.

North of Pen-Y-Mount Station, the footpath is fenced off to protect walkers from what will become the extension depot.

This fence will be temporary, and currently runs along the line of the connecting line to the FR.

During Civils week 2002 The Northern end of Pen-y-Mount Station was remodelled, to include a new crossover, and headshunt.

However to prepare for this, the existing track has to be removed, and the area lowered to accommodate the new crossing over Penmount Lane Crossing.

Civils Week, and the existing trackbed is dug up to allow a base of slate waste, and ballast to be laid.

The new line is lower that the existing one, so the level crossing can be built.

Finally the 2 points are installed, 1 60lb from the FR, and one 75lb, and assembled on site.

Pen-y-Mount Station is slowly being rebuilt. In September the new platform fence is installed.
This has been built using original fencing materials found alongside the Croesor Tramway section of the Railway

The PYM headshunt is extended to form a new loading ramp, required for Lilla's visit in a few weeks time.

the 60lb point is re-gauged, and 40ft of rail connected to give access to the Harbour Siding.

When the rails arrive, they will be unloaded each side of this siding, and rolled into the center to be moved to site.
